(for the keen readers of my newsletter, its CUSTOM not CUSOM - oops)Only had a couple of days to get this finished. It was to be hand delivered to the stylists address in north london, before they were due to fly to New York for a photoshoot to appear in April 2008's issue of i-D magazine (
update: The Gender Agenda issue - OUT NOW).
Before painting began, I block-masked areas off, I decided that I would use a lot of text in the panel work, under the collar etc.. The lyrics I chose for the jacket were inspired from the 'brief' (80's Hip Hop), so in the front panel (concealed by the zipper) I wrote 'it's like a jungle sometimes' and at the bottom on the back, a large 'down by law'. The collar also got treated to a large CHU, only visible when the collar is turned up.
I masked off the area for the boom box on the back and went a bit mad with painting, what felt like, a section of a larger painting. I couldn't resist putting a flame on the right sleeve. The aerosol was then reworked over in pens, black and white. Negative white space was drawn into the boom box silhouette, and the job was complete.
Shock & Soul have agreed to stock any leather jacket I have painted - head over to their shop for updates (
