During the hot summer of 2004, Chu was painting the most comprehensively 'surround-sound' painting to date. He was asked to paint a room inside a house that was later to become a gym for Alex, a 21 year old football fan.
A few years back, he was involved in a horiific car accident that resulted in his lower body to become paralysed. His family wished the painting in the gym would encourage him to use the facilities in there a lot more. Chu worked closely with Alex and created various scenes that began in his already vivid imagination. The scenes were created and the room had different views depending on where in the room you were. If you were positioned where one piece of equipment was, you would see something that you couldn't see from walking in the room.
Work was carried over to the ceiling to effectively 'delete' it. One wall was covered in slatted doors, covering storage cupboards. These doors even got painted to continue the feeling of continuity around the room. It became a story of 'going to another place'.
See if you can find the door into the room!
