Had a few hours in central London to decorate the inside of the Courvoisier Future Gallery. Through Monorex (the same people behind Secret Wars), 7 artists from the agency totally went for it on the walls. I went for another freestyle.  and decided from the start I was going to work on the floor to assist and elongate my section, without painting the width of the wall.

The colourscheme was borrowed from the one used at Glastonbury this year, wooden brown with a spot colour. Paint used was totally MTN 94, my choice lately as it works great from stock caps and the spectrum available suits my work. The city in the scene is being invaded by a victorian god of bass, playing on two gramophones and connected through a ships speed throttle. The fixed lighting in the room inspired a part of the effects used to limit the shading in the painting. Where the uplighters were on the floor, they ‘burnt out’ some of my lineworks, and the central light above made the top burn out too. The piece looked like it fell beneath your feet, yet almost turning upside down underneath where you stood.

It was a perfect oppurtunity to create another 360 degree panorama. Everybodys’ artworks made the room tower above you, larger than life works in a very white space gave the experience a bewildering effect on your vision. Or maybe it was the punch…

Monobrow Exhibition (with guests) in London

Limited edition 2 colour screenprints were also commissioned, and oddly the colours matched the LUT Overground branding (blue/orange) and the latest work for Monorex was a collabration in Shoreditch, where I painted a (censored) ‘Sodtherich’. 20 were printed and at the time of going to press there’s only 7 full sets left, consisting of 7 desigs from the artists involved:

Once again myself and Mau Mau painted the ‘So Soiled Crew’ skateboard ramp in the Greenpeace field at the wonderful Worthy Farm festival of performing arts (aka Glastonbury Festival).

The theme we decided on before we got there was to produce a scene of a ‘retail experience’ in a warehouse style shop, in a fixed colourscheme. As you can hopefully see, we focused on one particular brand to help with the message (namely PIKEA). The selected Greenpeace theme for the year was ’save the rain forest’ so we created a checkout and a father/child customer dressed in James Cameron’s’ Avatar costumes. Large sale slogans were used to dress the rest of the ramp. See the 360 panorama at the bottom…

The piece above was painted in Madrid to help promote the new game BLUR to a European audience. There is a time-lapse film that accompanies the launch campaign, a funny promotional advertisement that pokes fun at Mario Kart and a facebook page too. There is also a 360 panorama i made below…

We sourced the paint from the newly opened Montana retail outlet in Madrid (click for map). Two weeks previous it had been opened by NYC writer Blade. I painted for over 8 hours on a canvas roll at a studio owned and run by the Super Favier, then installed the cut out piece on Calle de Colòn in Madrid city centre. To achieve the cracking effect I used adhesive strips of vinyl cut irregularly whilst attaching them to the wall. The canvas was made to a size that covered the concealed entrance perfectly.

Once the install was finished, tire tracks were added on the ground and it was photographed with a projected graphic of one of the ‘barge’ power-ups in the game. The canvas was attached to a wall that could not be painted onto, as directed by the property owner, meaning we could install it at an Activision launch party the following day at an exclusive car showroom near Vicente Calderón football stadium, home of Real Madrid.

Freestyle interior for the huge (reopened) Debut club, underneath the arches of London Bridge railway station in London. There’s also a time-lapse of the production below.

The painting is the first painting to feature my Cassette Bike (on the left) racing over one of my cityscapes made of audio gear. The bike is the brother machine of my Turntable Tank, which is still to go into production this century. The piece is my first venture into painted lighting effects caused by the internal audio electricity, in flourescent paint. The piece can be found near one of the stages within the venue. Collaboration with some of the artists in the Secret Wars Euroleague teams from the UK.

This piece is the only painting that I have had censored. Ever.

The East London Line has just opened that travels immediately in front of the wall, between Shoreditch High Street and Haggerston stops. The Caitlin Art Group are art insurers that had organised a prize giving at the brilliant Village Underground space. The most baffling thing is why they chose to only partially paint out the entire wall, with their off-white, regatta inspired branding. Seems that the phrase Sod The Rich offended somebody. Now, was it somebody involved with the venue, the client, or Big Brother himself?

It was painted just the day before the general election and now it seems more fitting WITH the censorship. As far as i know its still there, and the black paint they had used to censor the text out has washed off slightly.

Poor Stika had some scaffolding fall on his hand (smashed his bones too) so he was out of action.

Here’s the final shot of the piece in Sodtheditch (sic). I’m told by the good people at Mutate Britain that it is alive and well and kissing the clouds from the rooftops. Notice the cans on the floor, working on the floor was my favourite moment, together with the mathematical ‘overlay’ effect, not sure what to call these yet. Their proper name is anamorphic projections, but much like my improvised largescale anaglyphic stereoscopy, it has to find a less hyphenated description. 3D as a name seems so varied, almost covers most of my perspective trickeries.

During the Birmingham squad’s visit to Berlin for Secret Wars, we found a little time on the last day to go paint just on the outskirts of the Kreuzberg district.

I turned up hours after Agent, Philth & Newso. They cracked on with local boy Prank on the long wall at this youth centre, then we were joined by DiscoTeck who added his inimitable style to the end of the main wall.

Looking at the shots I should have took part in the production, but my urge to paint a ’strange’ surface kicked in. My piece was reminiscent of the work done in Walsall, using the existing paint and the floor too. It was a great spot and nobody bothers you in Berlin, there’s street work absolutely everywhere; tags, bombs, throwups, pieces, everything was going on.

When I began working on this painting I knew it was going to be something new, a new technique must apply.

For ages I’ve been seeing the work of some pavement artists rendered in chalk (attached as a Word document or on one of those ‘10 amazing…’ sites). All the works have to be made stretched to accommodate the point of view, or plane distortion.

Making the floor seem to become another surface or even vanish completely.

The brief was ‘East meets West’. I researched tallships, the tea-routes and the shipping life. A tallship would take over 3 months to sail from Shanghai to London, traveling around the South of Africa. They would bring with them exotic spices and produce from the far east. The annual supplies of tea for the whole of the British Isles was brought in one haul.

Plane distortion requires that knowing the final surface to paint on is paramount, so i played with the concept of using bridges, as both a means of transport and communion. I created a scene in Google Sketchup, to economise on the possibility of not knowing the surface I was going to paint. I could always change the camera angle to suit.

Then it was just a simple case of painting freestyle, with only the digital concept in mind, working with the location and the paint.

Fisheye lenses have always interested me, as do any optical device to be honest with you. From door peepholes, to magnifying glasses. Microscopes to telescopes…

I’ve been pursuing the art of 360 degree photography for around 3 years now, inspired by the now (out of date) Apple’s QuicktimeVR. Even the cube I have currently shown in Birmingham is inspired by this passion for spatial visuals. I’ve got quite a few lying around that I’ve experimented with and occasionaly I’ll post them to this blog in their own native format.

I was flying through Google Earth the other day and noticed a layer called ‘360 Cities’. Toggling this layer shows you where photographers have positioned their 360 photograph on www.360cities.net

So I applied for an account and I can now publish some of my favourite 360s into Google Earth or even embed them into this blog (see below).
