On the opening night I nicknamed the cube my ‘headache machine’ as it induced some dizzy reaction by some of the visitors, as expected. The next level (v3.0) has to include audio to enhance the weight of the viewer’s disbelief.

I was asked to design a screenprint, alongside the 3D cube, for the Tiger beer Lucky 8 campaign. The brief was farely open, although the prints were to be an edition of 88 offered as gifts during the campaign.

Google Sketchup became the tool of choice to compose the ’scene’ and it soon became apparent that lanterns and a tiger were to play a central role in the drawing. The sketch was cleaned up and then the stereo version was mastered (two variations of the same sketch, one in red and the other in blue).

The edition will not be for sale, although I have a few for some very lucky people to receive, subscribe to be informed about a competition to win one

If you didn’t already know, I’m in the Birmingham squad for the Euroleague season of Secret Wars. Our team held a showcase at the fantastic Green Street warehouse in the heart of Digbeth, Brum (detailed images & a 360 below).

We all met up there and chatted for about an hour before we soaked our nibs with black ink. The wall was a massive 24 foot long and there were six of us to fill it in 90 minutes. We decided that our theme was going to be a ‘war room’, plotting our trip across Europe.

Our next (real) battle is against Lisbon on 26th February, so come along and lend us your support if you can make it to the Rainbow Pub on Digbeth High Street, Birmingham.

The wooden cube is now complete, ready to fill with my 3D artwork for the opening on Monday 15th February at the Boxxed venue (104-105 Floodgate Street, Birmingham B5 5SR).

My good friend Rich Holland ably assisted my design and lent his own skills to the construction. Rich also built the first cubic experiment last year for the 51 Degrees show. This time round we used wood of a higher quality and made a few invisible and radical changes to the timber. The whole unit can now be packed away and transported to other locations in smaller parts.

The cube would not have been possible if it weren’t for the help from Rich and Liam (who worked on Mutate Britain in London). They are two of the hardest working individuals I have ever had the joy to work with.

Dazed and Tiger are ready to celebrate Chinese New Year in London’s Chinatown next Thursday with Dazed’s series of specially curated film, art, music and photography events. These represents three of the Tiger Lucky 8 events with an additional five events taking place all around the UK. Representing the elements of the Chinese zodiac; Earth, Wood, Metal, Water and Fire, the events have been curated by Josef Valentino, the brains behind the Worthless pop-up exhibition. “When Tiger Beer invited me to curate ‘The Tiger Lucky 8′ I was adamant to work with a collection of talent who would revolutionize the way people interacted with Chinese New Year. The end result is a series of diverse and engaging exhibitions that respond intuitively towards the five elements of the Zodiac, whilst also demonstrating a rich breed of talent from across the UK,” explains Valentino.

In Birmingham.

This new cube will have a 3D interior, that you view through a pair of 3D glasses, as part of the Tiger Beer Lucky 8 campaign to celebrate Chinese New Year. The number 8 is considered to be a lucky charm in China, and the cube has 8 corners.

As you stand on the Sweet Spot within the cube and wear the glasses, the corners and joins will vanish out of sight, creating an illusion never witnessed before. Its the accumulation of a few techniques that I’ve been working with for some years and it was the next logical progression for my Cubic experiments. Recently an edition of only 33 prints of my new sketch ‘Cover Your Tracks’ was released in 3D too.

Secret Wars have confirmed the groups for this years season of the european league.

I’ll be teaming up with 5 other Birmingham artists (Newso, Glen, Phil Blake, Agent & TX). The format is like a football season, each team from the groups will have home and away fixtures, with the votes/points forming the league table. Winning an away battle earns the team more points than a win at home.

When I say ‘ideas’ I actually mean they’re my ideas, not a random mood board I’ve collected. It reads like a portfolio and does its best to feel like a book.

It occured to me that I have to update my portfolio quite regularly. Archiving all the images safe from harm becomes all the more intrepid when you begin to physically move things from one place to another. I’ve been looking at using Issuu for a long while now, you can see the book below, or visit the book.
